be a camera

We can see something of God in each person…Be a camera. Empty yourself and take pictures of people. Let yourself be surprised. Open your shutter just for a moment, and be amazed at the illumination that floods in. Even though you’ve already encountered millions of people in your lifetime, let this one, the one in front of you now, astonish you. Mike Mason, Practicing the Presence of People  (Colorado Springs: Waterbrook Press, 1999), 130.

Are you truly seeing the people in your life? How about the ones  living under your roof – the ones breaking bread and breaking rules – making noise and making messes? I think perhaps it’s hardest to truly see the ones that stand nearest. We are blinded by the familiar.

…For in the image of God has God made man.
Genesis 9:6

It’s so easy to turn your back when you don’t want to deal, or accept. But it’s so true, it’s those hair raising moments that we really need to take the time to embrace…as painful as it might be at first…it will lead us to freedom within ourselves.

I am in need of this reminder right now. It can be so hard, sometimes, to really see the people right in front of you, especially in the midst of difficulty. Thanks for posting this and helping me to remember to open my eyes more and take people in as they really are.

I just heard something this morning like this on the radio. The child was asking the mom to please get off the computer so they would feed them as they were hungry. Ouch! I felt like this could be me.
