the back of things

the back of things

Shall I tell you the secret of the whole world? It is that we have only known the back of the world. We see everything from behind, and it looks brutal. That is not a tree, but the back of a tree. That is not a cloud, but the back of a cloud. Cannot you see that everything is stooping and hiding a face? If we could only get round in front–[G.K. Chesterton, The Man Who Was Thursday]

How many times have I thrown my hands up in disgust at a God who seems callous and cold – One who allows sickness and sorrow,  pain and poverty. Is it possible that all the while, I have been looking only at “the back of things”?

These pains and troubles here are like the type that printers set. When we look at them, we see them backwards, and they seem to make no sense and have no meaning. But up there, when the Lord God prints out our life to come, we will find they make splendid reading. [Martin Luther]
